'À toi, pour toujours, ta Marie-Lou' is widely regarded as one of Michel Tremblay's greatest dramatic masterpieces — a claustrophobic, ghost-haunted chamber play of devastating musicality. For ten years, Manon Brassard has been unable to leave her home, trapped by the trauma of a family tragedy and locked in a destructive relationship with the past and with religion.
Her sister Carmen tries in vain to shake her free, while the play simultaneously unfolds the unhappy marriage of their parents, Léopold and Marie-Louise — two people who shared a home but never truly met, unable to name their own desires. Together, the Brassard family gives new and heartbreaking meaning to the idea of the family unit.
Director Henri Chassé returns to Tremblay four years after staging 'Le vrai monde?', and reunites with powerhouse performers Madeleine Péloquin and Michel Charette as the doomed couple, while Catherine Paquin-Béchard and Rose-Anne Déry take on the sharply contrasting roles of Manon and Carmen.
Produced by Théâtre du Rideau Vert, the production examines the ravages of a repressive era and the weight of inherited trauma — while leaving open the question of whether escape is possible.
