L'Académie Eurêka is set in autumn 2018 at a progressive private elementary school in California that prides itself on welcoming all children and upholding values of inclusion and goodwill. When a mumps outbreak strikes, those ideals are quickly put to the test, raising the question of whether accommodating every opinion can ultimately compromise everyone's safety.
Written by American playwright Jonathan Spector, the play uses sharp dialogue and dark comedy to probe collective living, critical thinking, and tolerance — and to expose the tension between scientific fact and personal conviction. It also interrogates the very limits of inclusion: what does it truly mean to include everyone when collective decisions must be made?
Originally produced in 2018, the play achieved significant success on Broadway and in London. This Montreal production marks its French-language premiere, in a translation by Marie-Claude Verdier, and is directed by David Strasbourg, previously responsible for Vermine radieuse at La Licorne and Merci d'être venus at Théâtre Denise-Pelletier.
Performances run Tuesday to Thursday at 19:00, Friday at 20:00, and Saturday at 16:00, from January 19 to February 27, 2027, on the La Grande Licorne stage.
