Société des arts technologiques (SAT) is a cultural centre and creative hub in Montreal, Quebec, at 1201 St-Laurent. It is devoted to digital arts, immersive experiences and technological innovation, and it works as much as a place to make new work as a place to see it.
What to expect
The building's most distinctive feature is the Satosphère, a geodesic dome used for immersive audiovisual performances. Visitors who come for a show here experience sound and image wrapping around them, which is quite different from a conventional theatre seat facing a stage.
Beyond the dome, SAT hosts events, artist residencies and creative projects, so the programme changes over time. Checking what is on before you travel will tell you whether a performance, an exhibition or a talk suits your visit.
Plan your visit
- Who it suits: visitors interested in digital art, new media and immersive performance, as well as anyone curious about how technology is used in creative work.
- Where to stay the rest of the day: the venue has a rooftop bar, which makes a relaxed place to pause before or after an event.
- Getting there: it sits on St-Laurent, one of Montreal's central north–south streets, so it is easy to combine with other stops in the city centre.
If you enjoy contemporary art and the experimental edge of Montreal's cultural life, SAT is a worthwhile stop, and it is best planned around a specific event so you know what you are going to see.
