Victoria Benedictsson (1850–1888) lived a brief but intense life: just 38 years, four published books, and a violent death by suicide. Despite the brevity of her career, she remains one of the most significant Scandinavian writers of the 1880s, celebrated for her fierce critique of women's rights and the institution of marriage.
Her best-known works include Pengar (Money), her breakthrough novel and acknowledged masterpiece; Fru Marianne (Mrs. Marianne), a psychological novel; Från Skåne (From Skåne), her debut short-story collection; and Efterlämnade dagböcker (Posthumous Diaries), her candid personal journals.
