Stravinsky, Sibelius & Unsuk Chin - DR Symphony Orchestra, Eva Ollikainen & Håkan Hardenberger

Finnish conductor Eva Ollikainen, based in Denmark, makes her long-awaited debut with the DR Symphony Orchestra in a programme spanning Russian modernism, Finnish folklore and a brand-new Korean-German voice.

Stravinsky's Petrushka (1911), the vivid and exhilarating ballet score depicting a puppet brought to life, opens the evening with an orchestra sparkling with wit and colour.

Sibelius's symphonic fantasy Pohjola's Daughter draws on the Finnish runic epic Kalevala, channelling the calls of Finland's rune-singers into a tone poem of shamanistic intensity.

The centrepiece is the Danish world premiere of a new trumpet concerto by South Korean composer Unsuk Chin — one of today's most respected and imaginative voices — written for and performed by legendary Swedish trumpeter Håkan Hardenberger. The concerto was commissioned by the DR Symphony Orchestra following Chin's participation in the Sonning Music Prize celebrations in 2021, and promises both structure and sensory richness.
