Tenor Mark Padmore and pianist Jonathan Biss join forces for an evening of German Lieder at Mogens Dahl Koncertsal on 6 October 2026. The first half presents nine Schubert Lieder drawn from outside his famous song cycles — including Der Wanderer an den Mond, Im Frühling, Im Freien, Nachtstück, Der Einsame and Der Winterabend — showcasing the intimate, organic dialogue between voice and piano that defines his approach to the genre.
The second half turns to Schumann, whose 1840 output saw an extraordinary outpouring of Lieder. Padmore and Biss have selected two lesser-known collections: the Kerner Lieder Op. 35 (twelve songs to texts by Justinus Kerner) and a selection from the H.C. Andersen Lieder Op. 40, settings of Andersen's poetry in German translation.
The programme offers a compelling arc through the Romantic Lied tradition, from Schubert's pioneering mastery to Schumann's more intensely lyrical successors.
