El Diamante Negro

The Black Diamond, known in Danish as Den Sorte Diamant, is a modern extension of the Royal Danish Library on the waterfront in Copenhagen. Its angled, glass-and-dark-stone façade stands out along the harbour, and it is one of the city's more striking contemporary buildings.

The address is Søren Kierkegaards Plads 1, in the central part of Copenhagen, a short walk from the city's inner harbour. The building sits at the water's edge, so it works well as a stop on a stroll along the quays, with the water and the surrounding streets in view.

What you can do there

Although it is part of a library, the building holds much more than books. Visitors can find:

  • Concert halls, for music performances across a range of styles
  • Exhibition spaces, which change over time
  • A cinema, for film screenings
  • Library functions, including reading and study areas

Because these activities share one building, a visit can be as simple as walking through the public spaces and taking in the architecture, or it can be built around a concert, a film or an exhibition.

The area around it

The Black Diamond makes a good anchor for exploring the waterfront. The harbour and the old city centre are close by, so a visit can easily combine the building with a walk through central Copenhagen. Check the venue's own listings before you go to see what is on during your stay.
