Pianist Zlata Chochieva presents an all-études recital centred on two pillars of the Romantic piano repertoire: Chopin's Études Op. 25 and Schumann's Symphonic Études Op. 13.
Chopin composed two sets of twelve études when he was in his early twenties. The Op. 25 set, heard this evening, is renowned for its fearsome technical demands and remarkable musical maturity, and is credited with revolutionising piano playing. Schumann's Symphonic Études, written around the same period, explore the instrument's expressive limits with near-orchestral complexity, and rank among the most virtuosic works in the Romantic piano literature.
Rounding out the programme are two transcriptions: César Franck's Prelude, Fugue and Variations Op. 18, arranged for piano by Ignaz Friedmann, and Béla Bartók's piano transcription of the slow movement from J.S. Bach's Trio Sonata No. 6 for organ (BWV 530).
