John Katokye brings the rarely heard ekyeshongoro vocal tradition of the Banyankore and Bahororo peoples of Western Uganda to ALICE for an extraordinary and intimate concert experience. Katokye performs as a duo, creating long, flowing vocal passages built from improvisation, poetry and storytelling.
In ekyeshongoro, a lead singer introduces a phrase before additional voices gradually weave in, building a continuous, undulating soundscape with no instruments. The music is deeply rooted in life on the savannah and the culture surrounding the iconic long-horned Ankole cattle.
In 2025, Katokye released Obuhangwa bwa Banyankore na Bahororo on the influential Ugandan label Nyege Nyege Tapes, recorded at Villa Nyege. The album has introduced his work to a global audience and established him as a leading ambassador of Banyankore and Bahororo musical heritage.
