Guided Tour of the Protestant Cemetery in Montpellier

Founded in 1804, the Protestant cemetery of Montpellier is the oldest cemetery in the city still in active use. This guided tour explores both the grand historical narrative and the intimate personal stories associated with the site.

The tour addresses the Protestant relationship with death, traces the three earlier cemeteries that preceded this one, and examines the periods of clandestinity the community experienced since the Wars of Religion.

Visitors will also discover funerary art and its symbolic vocabulary, notable monuments, and the tombs of several illustrious figures โ€” including that of the painter Frรฉdรฉric Bazille.

The tour runs over both days of the Journรฉes europรฉennes du patrimoine weekend, 19โ€“20 September 2026.
