Theatrical Reading: L'Étranger von Albert Camus - Emmanuel Franval & Martine Flaissier

The Cercle Culturel Languedocien hosts a theatrical reading of L'Étranger, the landmark 1942 novel by Albert Camus, performed by actor Emmanuel Franval and accompanied on the harp by Martine Flaissier.

Through the character of Meursault — an ordinary man disconnected from social conventions and incapable of feigning emotions he does not feel — Camus explores the human condition in a world devoid of inherent meaning. Condemned as much for his apparent indifference to his mother's death as for the murder he committed, Meursault becomes a symbol of solitude, the nature of justice, authentic being, and the confrontation with mortality.

Written in a deliberately spare style — short sentences, a neutral tone — the novel broke with 19th-century psychological traditions and left a lasting mark on modern literature. This reading gives the text a live theatrical dimension, enriched by the presence of the harp.

The event runs from 16:00 to 18:00 and is free as part of the European Heritage Days 2026.
