Katarina Barruk sings in Ume Sámi, a language UNESCO lists as critically endangered and spoken today by very few native speakers. Her music mixes pop, traditional joik and improvisation, delivered with a powerful voice and Indigenous vocal techniques.
At ALICE she presents a more intimate, raw and experimental side of her music, performing with Eirik Fjelde and Arnljot Nordvik.
Barruk debuted with Báruos in 2015 and has toured widely across Europe. She was the first Sámi artist to perform at Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms, and has worked with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra and Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. She has also played at Roskilde and Iceland Airwaves.
Her recent releases include the album Ruhttuo (2022) and the 2025 EP Guh Lejmeh Sámieh, made for the first theatre play in Ume Sámi in 100 years.
