Giant Mine grew out of a long journey across the land and its scars. It takes the form of an investigation into the human and ecological consequences of the Canadian mining industry. Creator Marie-Ève Fontaine started the project in 2020 and turns real testimonies from workers, communities and wounded landscapes into a theatrical experience that sits between installation and live performance.
The production is co-produced by the Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario in Sudbury and the Théâtre français du Centre national des Arts. It tells a fragmented story in which the ground, bodies and memory all carry the marks of an industry that both shapes and destroys. It is described as a theatre of listening and presence.
Marie-Ève Fontaine wrote the text and performs. Miriam Cusson directs. The performers are France Huot, Ben Nind and Jocelyn Sioui. The creative team includes Sasha Hayashi (assistant direction and stage management), Marie-Pierre Proulx (scenography), Isabelle Ratté (costumes), Thomas Sinou (sound design) and Sarah Merrette-Fournier (technical direction).
The performances are in the Salle Fred-Barry. Start times have not been announced yet. Tickets are available through the theatre's website.
